We went to the Dallas Museum of Art this past week for a field trip to see King Tut!
It was a great adventure that started at the Richland Hills TRE, which we rode to Union Station. We then hopped onto the DART which dove underground to City View! It was really neat. I had no idea how far underground the dart went. It was a subway station like in Europe! Anyhow, the kids hiked two HUGE staircases and then rode an elevator up to ground level. Where we hopped onto the M-Line Streetcar (which is over 95yrs. old - and boy could you feel it). It dropped us off right in front of the Museum. The Museum was very kid friendly and each of us got our own Audio tours. What you do is go around and many of the pieces have a number you dial in and it talks about the piece you are looking at. There is a kid friendly version and an adult version. The King Tut tickets included entrance into the main museum and an Audio Tour. I really wanted the Audio tour for Tut but after spending ~100 on tickets I did not want to pay an additional $7 for each Tut audio.. That would have been an additional $42. We were already pushing the budget. Being true to my coupon/deal heart, we were at the matinee-but there was no deal on the audios. I do recommend maybe getting one if you go. The exhibit took us about 2hrs. Some of the pieces were extraordinary. It is amazing what they were able to do in that time. Very interesting..the kids enjoyed it. I didn't get to spend as much time on each piece as I would have, if I hadn't had all 4 in tow. The kids just weren't really able to appreciate the detail the Egyptians put into their work.-BUT they loved running /walking fast :) to each piece and saying "tell me about this one." R would point and say "and this one ? and this one?" She thought the Egyptians were "gross for keeping the Queens different organs in jars?!?!" They loved that they were able to see King Tut even if only on TV - because he has never left Egypt. And they loved that at the end they could finally touch something - and the sign even said "Please Touch Me".. :) After spending 2hrs not being able to touch anything, their hands were just itching to touch all over something in there ! So they flocked to the replica of Tut's skull and thought it was so cool! We all decided he had a small head. After Tut, we spent the rest of our time in the children's area. The older kids made art and lil C stretched her legs and played in Arturo's Nest (which is a baby playroom). J put his feet up a relaxed and I did artwork with the older kids! When the museum closed, we made our way home. I am all about adventure and new experiences and this was a great one to share with the family. We met a lot of interesting people on our journey and all of them were really nice. (Not the typical people we meet just staying around here.) I loved the daily adventures I had when I backpacked through Europe and this small trip reminded me of what it was like! I hope to one day all backpack through Europe :)
