Beware of the Rewrite
Well we went to a very disappointing play this past weekend. A rewrite of a classical children's story. Why do they feel the need to take a classic and update it? It is a classic, timeless. It was already good to begin with. It was such a terrible show. There was a drag queen, a sorry pathetic (king) who was quite feminine (pink hair and bad accent), a queen who commented on how her marriage was not good, a big dumb strong guy, a princess who wanted to leave home -and a comment was made that she wanted or was into boy toys or something. It was all hip hoppy and sassy and the characters were rude to each other. Much of what was said was completely above the 10 and under target audience. It was awful. I was ready to leave ten minutes into the first act. I kept looking around wondering if anyone else felt the same as I did. I was also wondering where I missed the info. about this take on the story. I wanted my fairy tale. I took my kids to see a fairy tale. We all know that life is not a fairy tale, I could have just sat them in front on the t.v. Why do people think that things need to be updated and changed around all the time for kids to get it or like it? I feel that we are the ones conditioning children to need things to be that way. A baby does not come out of the womb needing an I POD or special effects. My baby is happy with a piece of paper and the noise and satisfaction she gets out of tearing it. I guarantee every child in that audience would have been thrilled with the original story. (And now I shall step down from my soap box) I won't even get started on the way they depicted the men in this fairy tale. A BIG no no with me...but I shall zip it!
